Encouraging Women to Teach the Bible
WRF member Susan Logan writes: How do we encourage women to study the Bible on their own and with others? In my experience this happens best when women discover that Scripture is accessible to them. Such a discovery is often a by-product of a small group working together.
First, women see how the Holy Spirit uses their individual investment in careful reading and re-reading of the text to bring new understanding of -- and delight in – God’s Word!
Then, women find that, as members of Christ’s body they can, in fact, contribute to each others’ growth in grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus! Good study materials can guide and enrich group time. In our women’s Bible study, we’ve used materials on various Old and New Testament texts developed by New Life Church.
This fall we used a workbook on Psalms written by Kathleen Nielson. Both formats ask women to prepare in advance answers to five-days’ worth of questions. For Dr. Nielson’s materials see "Resources" at www.covenant.edu. There is a charge for these study guides.
However, those developed by women at New Life Presbyterian Church (PCA, in Glenside, PA, USA) are free downloads. See www.newlifeglenside.com These sources lend themselves to translation into other languages.
Excellent materials for Bible study leaders can be found at www.proctrust.org.uk . Look at their Teach the Bible Series. Under audio, some of the tapes in "Instruction on Bible Books" are free.
For women living in the USA, Women in the Word: A Workshop has as its goal giving women an opportunity to develop their Bible teaching skills. Affiliated with WRF, this two-day workshop is a practical, hands-on conference designed to improve the content of women’s teaching. The 2008 Women in the Word: A Workshop will be held on October 3 and 4, 2008, at Calvary Presbyterian Church in Willow Grove, PA. In April, visit the WRF web site for more details and a brochure in printable format.
