A call to prayer and support for Manipur violence victims – India

On 3rd May 2023, All Tribal Students Union Manipur (ATSUM) organized a Peaceful Rally in Churachandpur district against the Manipur high court order, granting the Scheduled Tribe status of the Meitei community. Meitei forms the majority population (about 53%) of the state. Towards the end of the peaceful march, miscreants (Meitei people) burnt the Memorial Gate and houses of the tribals situated between Churachandpur and Moirang. Upon hearing, the tribals went to the spot and confronted the miscreants and torched Meitei houses. That was how the situation escalated.

The sad and painful thing was that the local officials seems to be siding with the Meitei people by allowing the armed groups to disperse the tribals by means of tear gas and gunfire, making ways for the mob to loot houses and burnt them to ashes. The tribal victims ran out of their houses with only what they wore and fled to find shelter. Meitei are Hindus and Tribal people are Christians. The government in Manipur is led by Meitei People.

The total number of displaced as reported (Increasing each day) persons as on 20 May ’23 was 33,315 persons living in 97 camps (numbers counting), 5180 in emergency camps, 195 injured, 20 confirmed death, unconfirmed dead 52+, Number of villages burnt were 106 villages. Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal - 18 unidentified bodies, Churachandpur Hospital 18 bodies unidentified. Renewable Identified Numbers (RINs) 52 Unidentified Bodies.

Please, pray and support:

  1. Pray for peace to prevail among Tribals and Meitei people.
  2. Pray for Government officials and Tribal heads to work out a solution.
  3. Pray for the displaced and hurt people and God’s grace upon them. Those who have lost their houses, household things, including their valuable documents.
  4. Pray for volunteers from philanthropic organizations and NGO’s as they deliver food and other supplies.
