Religious Freedom for Evangelical Christians and Muslims

This News Item Shared By PCA Minister and WRF Member, Dr. Thomas Johnson (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.): Leaders from the world’s largest independent Muslim organization and the world’s largest Evangelical Christian organization are beginning a joint effort to respond globally to threats to religious freedom coming from religious extremism and secular extremism.

They have appointed top-level theologians, human rights theorists, and religious freedom activists from both religions to a Humanitarian Islam/World Evangelical Alliance joint working group to reshape the global discussions and interactions of religions in academia, public life, education, conflict resolution, and humanitarian needs. For full details of this effort, see the attached document.

This comes in direct response to terrible levels of religious persecution and religiously motivated violence seen in the twenty-first century.

A response to this article has been written by another WRF member, Dr. Jay Lykins, who is now retired but who served both as a Foreign Service Officer for the U. S. State Department and as a Ruling Elder in a congregation of the PCA.  That response is also attached to this item.

The links embedded in our WEA press release about Humanitarian Islam contain a lot more info about the movement. It has a century of documented history of rejecting the violence coming from Arab Islam, though the NU is, technically, a variety of Sunni Islam. Their theologians have developed and implemented a different hermeneutic for interpreting and applying the contents of the Muslim texts and traditions which has led them to different results in the realm of ethics and society, including a definition of Sharia that is totally different from anything seen in the Middle East.
